Continental Summary

A few moderate movements in the East highlighted an otherwise quiet part for migration across the nation, as large scale and diverse movements for this season are long gone. Species on the move this week included Snow Goose, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Blue Jay, Cedar Waxwing, American Robin, Common Grackle, Rusty Blackbird, American Tree Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco.

West

Widely scattered light movements were the norm across the region for this period. Species on the move this week showcase an interesting assortment of migrants and dispersers that included Common Goldeneye, Ancient Murrelet, Snow Goose, Forster’s Tern, Elegant Tern, Hooded Merganser, White-winged Dove, Merlin, and Long-billed Curlew.

Great Plains

Scattered and local light to moderate movements on Monday night highlighted an otherwise quiet period in the region. Species on the move this week included Cackling Goose, Bufflehead, Common Merganser, Common Goldeneye, Canada Goose, Hooded Merganser, Dark-eyed Junco, Mallard, Snow Goose, Northern Flicker, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Cedar Waxwing, Downy Woodpecker, and  Golden-crowned Kinglet.

Upper Midwest and Northeast

Light to moderate movements were primarily localized in coastal areas for the period, with some widely scattered light to moderate movements in the Upper Midwest and Appalachians to round out the flights. Species on the move this week feature migrants and some well and frequently reported vagrants and included Tundra Swan, Couch’s Kingbird, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, American Tree Sparrow, Snowy Owl, Marsh Wren, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and Common Redpoll.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

Most of the region saw brief glimpses of moderate movements among primarily light flights, particularly on Monday and Tuesday nights. Species on the move this week included Bufflehead, American Goldfinch, Hooded Merganser, American Robin, Dark-eyed Junco, Chipping Sparrow, Lesser Scaup, White-throated Sparrow, Common Grackle, Cedar Waxwing, Rusty Blackbird, Ring-billed Gull, and Northern Shoveler.
