Continental Summary

Scattered and local light to moderate flights begin and end the period in the West and feature White-winged Scoter, Common Loon, Western Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Dunlin, Marsh Wren, and White-throated Sparrow, moderate to heavy flights begin and end the period in the East and feature American Wigeon, Surf Scoter, Pied-billed Grebe, Northern Harrier, Sandhill Crane, Dunlin, Sedge Wren, Lincoln’s Sparrow, and Pine Siskin.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

Locally moderate to heavy flights follow the passage of a low pressure system in New England to begin the weekend, and then become more widespread with favorable conditions on Sunday and Monday. By Tuesday warmer air builds into the region and will keep most movements light at best. As this warm air mass moves east, migration will be locally moderate where conditions allow. But these locally marginal conditions will yield to much more widespread favorable migration conditions with the passage of the next frontal boundary on Wednesday night and Thursday, which will usher a new pulse of moderate to very heavy flights across much of the region to end the period.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

Most of the period is dominated by a warmer air mass that will keep migration local and light in most of the region away from the Atlantic coastal plains of the Carolinas through peninsular Florida. Here, migration will be light to moderate, with occasionally heavier coastal flights in calm or marginally favorable winds. Not until Thursday will there be a significant change, with cooler air and more favorable winds bringing more widespread moderate to heavy flights to most of the region east of Texas.

Great Plains

Migration action will be focused on the northern and central Plains for the weekend, with moderate to heavy flights localized to these areas where cooler air and more favorable winds persist. A warm air mass and southerly flow kicks off the work week, followed by sporadic passing disturbances through the remainder of the week. With each of these disturbance comes a pulse of local and scattered moderate flights, possibly heavier in some areas where ephemeral favorable conditions are more extensive than forecast. The most widespread and intense of these flights will be on Wednesday night.

West

Light to moderate flights in the northern tier are the highlight for the first part of the weekend in the West. Generally unfavorable winds and widespread, and at times intense, precipitation that keep migrants grounded follows for most of the region thereafter until Tuesday night. There are a few local exceptions in the eastern portion of the region, where some light to locally moderate flights may occur. Tuesday night will see light to moderate flights from portions of California and the Desert Southwest north and east through the northern Rockies. These flights stay local until favorable migration conditions become slightly more extensive to end the week on Thursday and Friday; light to moderate flights will follow, primarily in southern and eastern areas.
