Regional Migration Forecast: 6-13 October 2017

Yellow-rumped Warbler. Henry Trombley/Macaulay Library. eBird S39528840.

Continental Summary

Pulses of moderate movements that feature Cackling Goose, Western Grebe, Herring Gull, Northern Flicker, American Robin, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and White-crowned Sparrow will be the norm for the first half of the period in the West, while late period moderate to very heavy flights featuring Cooper’s Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Marsh Wren, Sedge Wren, Gray Catbird, Pine Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Towhee, and Nelson’s Sparrow will occur in the East after the passage of the remnants of Hurricane Nate. Hurricane Nate will bring the potential for Gulf of Mexico pelagic species far inland in the first half of the period from its arrival at the Gulf Coast on Saturday night through its departure though southern New England on Tuesday.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

Upper Midwest and Northeast

A weekend of mostly unfavorable conditions kicks off the period for the region in advance of a significant low pressure system approaching by Monday. The arrival of this system, the remnants of Hurricane Nate, brings with it significantly more favorable migration conditions. As this storm passes, with the potential for lingering entrained species like Magnificent Frigatebird, moderate to very heavy flights will follow to the west of its track. These flights occur first in the Great Lakes region on Monday night, expanding to much of the region by Wednesday night, and continuing with a more eastern distribution to end the period. Note that another area of disturbed weather moves through the region in the middle of the work week, bring potential for local concentration and fallouts where migrants and precipitation meet (for example in the Ohio River Valley and portions of the Great Lakes and northern Appalachians).

Gulf Coast and Southeast

The first half of the period is dominated by the passage of Hurricane Nate. This storm will certainly bring entrained Gulf of Mexico species like Magnificent Frigatebird well inland in the region, but any birders considering storm chasing should put safety first above all else. As the storm system moves ashore, local moderate to heavy flights may occur to the west of the system. But once the system moves inland by Sunday, significantly more favorable migration conditions arrive in Texas. Moderate to very heavy flights are likely across the region for Wednesday and Thursday nights, as more favorable winds and clearer skies prevail.

Great Plains

A patchwork of favorable and unfavorable migration conditions pepper the region with moderate to locally heavy flights for the weekend. As low pressure vacates by Sunday, more favorable winds spread across the region. Moderate to very heavy flights will become widespread across the region through Tuesday night. More southerly flow diminishes the intensity and extent of these flights by Wednesday, and conditions for migration continue to deteriorate through the remainder of the period with flights becoming locally light and moderate. Precipitation is not forecast, so if winds are calmer or more westerly than forecast, more intense movements may occur.

West

Moderate movements, in the Desert Southwest on Friday night and in the northern portions of the region on Saturday and Sunday nights, kick off the period. Flights continue on Monday night, particularly in the Rockies, where some movements may be locally heavy or very heavy. By Tuesday night less favorable conditions move into many areas, though moderate flights continue in the Pacific Northwest and portions of the southern Rockies. The remainder of the period sees marginal and unfavorable conditions build into most areas, with only portions of the northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest experiencing light to moderate flights.
