Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted). Tom Johnson/Macaulay Library. eBird S31752577
Continental Summary
Favorable migration conditions from mid weekend through the middle of the work week bring light and moderate flights featuring Greater White-fronted Goose, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Black-bellied Plover, Townsend’s Warbler, and Lincoln’s Sparrow to the West this period, while moderate to very heavy flights that feature Swainson’s Hawk, American Golden-Plover, Northern Flicker, Eastern Phoebe, Blue-headed Vireo, Palm Warbler, and Magnolia Warbler grace the East for the first half of the period in advance of less favorable migration conditions building in many areas later in the period.
Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.
We use data collected by eBird users help make more accurate forecasts. If you enjoy the predictions contained in these posts, please consider submitting your own bird sightings to eBird to even further improve the content. Every observation counts, whether it be a single bird at a feeder in your backyard, or an entire day spent in a national park. To get started with eBird, head on over to the site !
Please note that photographs and other digital media showing birds come from the Macaulay Library , which receives credit along with the photographer/observer in the media caption as part of a new initiative that allows public contribution, access and use of natural history media .

Quick Links to Regions
Upper Midwest and Northeast
The arrival of a cool and dry airmass brings moderate to locally very heavy flights to most of the region for the first days of the period. This includes some morning flight in coastal locations, particularly on Friday morning. By late in the weekend, only coastal areas will continue to experience favorable and marginal migration conditions, and moderate flights will occur primarily east of the Hudson River. By Monday night a pattern of warmer air and less favorable winds establishes itself for the days that follow, keeping migration local and generally light. Some areas may see more intense movements, as small pockets of marginal and even favorable conditions occur in the region. The first signs of some changes are late in the period, when a disturbance brings a change of wind to some parts of the region, particular northern New England where moderate to locally heavy flights will occur.

Gulf Coast and Southeast
Moderate to very heavy flights grace the region for the first half of the weekend, as the passage of a cold front and the arrival of cooler and drier air spawns intense movements. By Sunday less favorable conditions build from both the east and the west – a developing tropical disturbance keeps many birds in Florida and the coastal plains grounded, while warmer air and southerly flow has a similar effect farther west. Although this pattern generally remains in place during the remainder of the period, some later period weakening is forecast to occur – where this happens, particularly in Florida through the Carolinas, more favorable migration conditions with moderate to locally very heavy flights will occur.

Great Plains
Most of the period will be dominated by marginal and unfavorable migration conditions, as several disturbances and a warm air mass keep most birds on the ground. To begin and end the week, local moderate to heavy flights are likely, with greater extents in the first days of the period. The northern Plains are the most likely areas to experience migration in the mid week period, as some favorable conditions associated with a slow-moving frontal boundary opens some possibilities for flights. Birders in the northern Plains should watch the passage or stall of this frontal boundary, as there is good potential for fallouts and concentrations across a broad area where precipitation is forecast along the boundary.
Orange-crowned Warbler. Tony Leukering/Macaulay Library. eBird S39439528.

West
A slow start for the region changes quickly, as favorable migration conditions arrive on Saturday night. This arrival spawns moderate flights in the Pacific Northwest east through portions of the northern and central Rockies. These conditions continue for several days, producing similarly intense flights through Tuesday night. By Wednesday the extent of this movements decreases rather significantly, distributed instead in more western reach of the region. As the period comes to an end, this distribution has light to moderate flights primarily in California and the Desert Southwest. Note that most of the eastern half of the region sees marginal and unfavorable conditions for migration for most of the period, keeping migration light and local.
