West
Light to moderate movements were widespread in the region from the weekend through early in the work week. But scattered precipitation associated with the passage of tropical moisture in the Desert Southwest shut down movements in portions of this sub-region by Tuesday and Wednesday nights. By the end of the period, scattered light movements occurred across much of the region. Species on the move this week included Hermit Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Vioet-green Swallow, Vaux’s Swift, Swainson’s Thrush, and Western Wood-Pewee.
Great Plains
Widespread moderate movements bookended the weekend in the Plains, although the southern Plains had some locally significant storms on Sunday night that stopped movements there. Another substantial pulse of moderate and local heavy movements occurred on Tuesday night in the wake of a passing disturbance. The end of the week saw variable weather conditions including locally favorable winds and scattered precipitation that yielded some moderate flights at the same time as total migration shutdowns, respectively. Species on the move this week included Sprague’s Pipit, Swamp Sparrow, Le Conte’s Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Greater Scaup, Field Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Song Sparrow, American Tree Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Eastern Meadowlark, American Wigeon, and Purple Finch.
Upper Midwest and Northeast
Moderate to locally heavy flights occurred over the weekend across the region away from New York and New England, with coastal portions of those areas finally seeing some action on Sunday night. A similar pattern evolved again to begin the work week, with moderate to heavy movements in the Upper Midwest and no movements in precipitation over New England. Wednesday and Thursday nights saw much more widespread moderate to heavy movements, with many migrants on the move as evidenced by a substantial morning flight along the region’s coast on Friday morning. Species on the move this week included American Coot, Fox Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, Ruddy Duck, Dark-eyed Junco, Pied-billed Grebe, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Bonaparte’s Gull, White-throated Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Swamp Sparrow, Gadwall, and Pine Siskin
Gulf Coast and Southeast
The moderate to heavy flights that kicked off the weekend across the region subsided by Sunday night, when only coastal portions of the region experienced such movements. These flights were followed by a period of light to moderate and relatively local movements until the end of the period, when some portions of the southeastern coastal Plain experienced heavier flights. Species on the move this week included Pied-billed Grebe, Yellow-rumped Warbler, House Wren, American Coot, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, White-throated Sparrow, Northern Flicker, Palm Warbler, Eastern Phoebe, Orange-crowned Warbler, Red-necked Phalarope, American Wigeon, Gray Catbird, and Swamp Sparrow
