In light to moderate migration Mountain Bluebird, Hooded Oriole, Barn Swallow, and Lucy’s Warbler were on the move last weekend in the West, while Wood Duck, Killdeer, American Woodcock, and Northern Parula composed mid to late week flights in the East.
West
Light to moderate movements were the norm across the Desert Southwest and California to kick off the forecast period last weekend. Precipitation put an end to many of these movements with its arrival on Tuesday night, although some similar intensity flights continued along the Pacific Coast as the period drew to a close. Species on the move this week included Mountain Bluebird, Hooded Oriole, Barn Swallow, Killdeer, Lucy’s Warbler, Red-winged Blackbird, Rufous Hummingbird, House Wren, American Robin, Yellow Warbler, Western Meadowlark, and Black-chinned Hummingbird.
Great Plains
Scattered, and at times local, light to moderate movements occurred over the course of the last week. The extent of these movement comprised primarily the central and southern Plains’ states and were defined by passing low pressure (particularly on Saturday and Monday nights). Species on the move this week American Woodcock, Blue-winged Teal, Common Grackle, Killdeer, Western Meadowlark, Merlin Common Redpoll, Northern Shoveler, American Robin, Loggerhead Shrike, and Canada Goose.
Upper Midwest and Northeast
A quite weekend for migration slowly gave way to local light to moderate movements by mid week. These movements were most apparent from the central Mississippi River valley east to the eastern shore of Virginia. Species on the move this week Killdeer, Wood Duck, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Tree Swallow, Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, Turkey Vulture, Canada Goose, American Woodcock, Sandhill Crane, Ring-billed Gull, and American Robin.
Gulf Coast and Southeast
Scattered light to moderate movements characterized this forecast period. The most consistent and extensive of these movements occurred in the southeast, including movements of birds from Cuba into Florida, through Florida, and in portions of the southern Appalachians and southeastern coastal plain. Species on the move this week included Northern Parula, Field Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, Canada Goose, Louisiana Waterthrush, Barn Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Blue-winged Teal, Yellow-throated Vireo, Chuck-will’s-widow, White-eyed Vireo, and Common Grackle.
