Continental Summary

Favorable conditions begin and end the period in the West where light to moderate flights will feature Common Loon, Gadwall, Turkey Vulture, Ruby-crownd Kinglet, Yellow Warbler, and Lincoln’s Sparrow, while the non coastal East sees an extended period of favorable conditions bring moderate to heavy flights featuring Sharp-shinned Hawk, Northern Flicker, Blue-headed Vireo, Nashville Warbler, Pine Warbler, Palm Warbler, Lincoln’s Sparrow, and Western Meadowlark.

Wondering what species are migrating through right now? Check out our analysis for the past 7 days.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

We use data collected by eBird users help make more accurate forecasts. If you enjoy the predictions contained in these posts, please consider submitting your own bird sightings to eBird to even further improve the content. Every observation counts, whether it be a single bird at a feeder in your backyard, or an entire day spent in a national park. To get started with eBird, head on over to the site!

Upper Midwest and Northeast

An extended period of favorable northeasterly flow will persist across much of the region from the weekend through Wednesday or Thursday. These nights will feature moderate to locally very heavy flights. However, though many coastal areas will experience these favorable winds, they will not see rain free skies for the entirety of this period, as a strong low pressure center, coupled with winds and rains associated with the (at present) offshore passage of Joaquin, will shut down movements. Of course, birders at or near the coast who can safely visit coastal locations will be in for an interesting mix of near-shore and true pelagic sea watching from Friday through early in the work week. By Wednesday and Thursday, favorable conditions are limited mostly to coastal northern New England and the mid Atlantic states, as southerly flow builds into the region west of the Appalachians. The period ends will primarily unfavorable conditions for migration across the region.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

Away from the immediate southeastern coastal Plain and Florida, a prolonged period of favorable conditions sees moderate to locally very heavy flights from the southern Appalachians west to Texas. These conditions persist through Wednesday before more southerly flow begins to dampen the exodus, first to the west of the Mississippi River valley on Wednesday, then farther east on Thursday. Note, however, that favorable conditions late in the period continue in Georgia and the Carolinas, where moderate to heavy flights will continue.

Great Plains

Mostly unfavorable conditions keep migrants grounded for much of the weekend and early work week. Some pockets of more favorable winds and clear skies, notably in the central and southern Plains, may allow isolated moderate and heavy flights. A change comes on Wednesday and Thursday, as a frontal boundary pushes across the region. In its wake, moderate to very heavy movements will follow to end the period as favorable conditions build from the Canadian border to Oklahoma. Note that concentrations may occur where birds interact with precipitation associated with the frontal passage, and situations where low visibility and migration overlap will produce movements with high instances of nocturnal flight calling.

West

A period of favorable conditions for light to moderate flights kicks off the weekend in California and the northern portion of the region. By Sunday and Monday, however, these movements will diminish substantially as southerly flow returns with some scattered precipitation. But the favorable conditions return, first in the northern Rockies on Wednesday, then to nearly the entire region by Thursday. The conditions will see a return of light to moderate flights, with some locally heavy flights in more eastern extents of the region.
