Forecast and live migration maps return for spring 2021

Andrew Farnsworth The Cornell Lab Mar 01, 2021

Today begins the spring 2021 forecasting season for BirdCast!

Please visit our site regularly to see updated same-night and second- and third-night-in-advance forecasts for bird migration in the contiguous US. Below is the forecast map for this evening, 1 March 2021. You’ll notice many areas of low intensity migration, and some slightly more intense movements predicted in peninsular Florida. This pattern is quite common during the early period of “spring” movements, but note also that low intensity movements are predicted in many other areas, highlighting the beginnings of the broad geographic fronts over which migration will unfold in the coming weeks.

Of course, more intense local movements do occur, as evidenced by last night’s live migration map below. Once again, the southeastern US has some action, in this case higher intensity than is forecast for this evening (note also we can the direction these birds are moving, generally north-northeast). So, too, we see movements, generally to the north, in the Pacific coast region. Thus, it goes without saying, but we will say it anyway – please don’t forget to monitor nocturnal migration as it happens with our live migration maps, even now during these late winter and early spring nights of March!

Of course, we will also be highlighting happenings in the world of migration, so please look for updates here and in our Twitter feed. For a quick overview of species on the move in your areas in the coming 7-14 days, check out our arrivals’ tables that follow:
