Forecast and Analysis

Regional Migration Forecast: 1-8 September 2017

Andrew Farnsworth The Cornell Lab Sep 01, 2017

Gray Catbird. Max McCarthy/Macaulay Library. eBird S38503313.

Continental Summary

Pulses of early and mid period favorable migration conditions will bring similarly time pulses of moderate flights to many areas of the West featuring American White Pelican, Killdeer, Elegant Tern, Cassin’s Vireo, Yellow Warbler, and MacGillivray’s Warbler, while a significant mid period cold front will spawn moderate to very heavy flights in the East featuring Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Common Nighthawk, Least Flycatcher, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, numerous warblers, and Bobolink. As the remnants of Harvey plod through the eastern US early in the period, a new and currently strong tropical system (Irma) will be approaching the southeastern US by the end of the period; BirdCast will be watching closely.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

We use data collected by eBird users help make more accurate forecasts. If you enjoy the predictions contained in these posts, please consider submitting your own bird sightings to eBird to even further improve the content. Every observation counts, whether it be a single bird at a feeder in your backyard, or an entire day spent in a national park. To get started with eBird, head on over to the site!

Upper Midwest and Northeast

Moderate to heavy flights will kick off the weekend in many areas, but they will become increasingly restricted by Sunday and Monday; the remnants of Hurricane Harvey and some significant southerly flow will keep many birds out of the skies in many areas. But a strong frontal boundary following Harvey’s remnants will bring a fresh set of favorable migration conditions by Monday night, particularly in the Upper Midwest, where moderate to locally very heavy flights will occur. As this frontal boundary pushes east, these intense movements will spread toward the coast, reaching their greatest extents on Wednesday night. By Thursday and Friday more variable conditions will be apparent, in part due to the approach of Hurricane Irma; moderate and heavy flights are still likely, but most of these flights will be away from the immediate coast.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

As many areas begin to dry (at least in the sky) after last week’s unprecedented torrential inundation, migrants mostly face marginal migration conditions; light to locally moderate flights will be the norm in most areas from Friday through Wednesday. However, Wednesday night sees the arrival of a significant cold front, spawning heavy and very heavy flights mostly west of the Mississippi River Valley. By Thursday night these intense flights spread farther east as the frontal boundary reaches Florida and the Carolinas. Hurricane Irma approaches the region by Friday, but its path remains uncertain relative to the strong frontal boundary forecast to sit on the Atlantic Coast; migrants will continue in moderate to heavy flights from Texas east to Appalachia.

Great Plains

Scattered moderate to locally heavy flights punctuate the airspace above the region for the first days of the period; but a change comes on Monday, with the arrival of northerly flow that will spawn moderate to very heavy flights on Monday night. These flights occur mostly in northern and central Plains before expanding across the region on Tuesday night. As more marginal conditions approach, lower intensity flights occur on Wednesday night and continue to decrease in extent and intensity as the period comes to an end.

West

Moderate flights are widespread to begin the period, with the exception being the Desert Southwest and southern Rockies. These flights continue, albeit significantly reduced in extent over the following days as more marginal conditions build into the region. Note that a weakening Tropical Storm Lidia passes south of the region, perhaps bring a stray pelagic waif to southern California on Saturday or Sunday. The work week begins with widespread favorable conditions for moderate flights in the northern half of the region, in particular the northern Rockies where more intense flights may occur. These conditions continue, deteriorating slightly by Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with concurrent decreases in flight intensities. This pattern continues through the end of the period, with most flights during the latter half of the work week being light and scattered away from the immediate coast (e.g. moderate flights are possible in portions of the Pacific Northwest).
