Continental Summary

Favorable migration conditions do not arrive in the West until mid period, bringing light to moderate flights of Redhead, Ruddy Duck, Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Flicker, Hermit Thrush, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Western Meadowlark, Fox Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco, while a warming trend in the East yields to more typical fall conditions featuring moderate to heavy movements of Pied-billed Grebe, Franklin’s Gull, Northern Flicker, American Kestrel, Eastern Bluebird, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Red-winged Blackbird, White-throated Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

We use data collected by eBird users help make more accurate forecasts. If you enjoy the predictions contained in these posts, please consider submitting your own bird sightings to eBird to even further improve the content. Every observation counts, whether it be a single bird at a feeder in your backyard, or an entire day spent in a national park. To get started with eBird, head on over to the site!

Additionally, please note that photographs and other digital media showing birds come from the Macaulay Library, which receives credit along with the photographer/observer in the media caption as part of a new initiative that allows public contribution, access and use of natural history media.

Upper Midwest and Northeast

A warming trend follows the passage of a strong cold front departing off the Atlantic Coast, dominating the region’s weather for the first half of the period. Light to locally heavy coastal flights on Friday night will highlight the weekend’s migration scene, as southerly winds hold sway in most other areas. A small disturbance moving through the Great Lakes will bring some marginal and locally favorable conditions to the northern reaches of New York and New England to end the weekend and beginning of the work week, with light to locally heavy flights following suite. However, not until Tuesday night does a larger cool air mass arrive, bringing moderate to locally very heavy flights to the Upper Midwest. These spread east by Wednesday night, though mostly in the northern half of the region. The period ends with a complex mix of precipitation, favorable winds, and exciting opportunities worth pondering and revisiting as the period unfolds as low pressure moves through the mid-Atlantic. Depending on the interaction of precipitation and migration, fallouts and local concentrations may occur in a widespread zone from the Appalachians east and north through New England. Those interested in flight calling and visible nocturnal migration should pay particularly close attention to illuminated locations during this time, as areas of migration activity, precipitation and low cloud ceiling overlap. Those with abilities to extinguish lights in these locations and during these conditions should consider doing so.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

Conditions are mostly unfavorable for migration for most of the region through the bulk of the forecast period. Other than locally moderate to heavy flights in the coastal southeast and portions of Florida during the first half of the period, southerly flow and warm air make for poor conditions for migration in most other areas. The change arrives on Thursday, as precipitation pushes east ahead of a low pressure center. As the low moves east, favorable conditions for migration will bring moderate to very heavy flights. However, these will be mostly west of the Mississippi River during this period, as the low is not forecast to travel far enough east to spawn widespread flights.

Great Plains

Locally moderate to heavy movements punctuate the region through the weekend and into the beginning of the work week, as generally unfavorable conditions persist in many areas. Widespread movements are likely, though, once these conditions give way to more typical autumn weather on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; moderate to very heavy flights are likely as these conditions arrive. By Friday morning, only the central and southern Plains will still be active with migrant arrivals, as more northerly locations begin to experience southerly winds. Those interested in flight calling and visible nocturnal migration should pay particularly close attention to illuminated locations on Wednesday to Friday nights, as areas of migration activity, precipitation and low cloud ceiling overlap. Those with abilities to extinguish lights in these locations and during these conditions should consider doing so.

West

Conditions will be unfavorable for migration across the region for the first half of the forecast period. Southerly flow and precipitation will keep migrants grounded. In addition, a significant and strong storm system arrives in the Pacific Northwest to kick off the weekend, bringing a dangerous mix of heavy rains, strong wind, and generally intense weather to the region. This storm may force large numbers of seabirds and waterbirds in offshore and near shore coastal areas to shore, but dangerous conditions in coastal locations may prevent anyone from seeing such displacements. By Monday and Tuesday nights increasing areas of more favorable conditions appear, with light to moderate movements in the California, the Great Basin and Desert Southwest by Tuesday night. Wednesday night will see the greatest extents of these favorable conditions, and so too the most extensive light to moderate flights across much of the southern half of the region. The end of the week will see these extents generally restricted to more southern and eastern locations, with the potential for intensities to increase locally in the favorable conditions over the eastern and southern Rockies.
