Forecast and Analysis

Regional Migration Forecast: 15-22 September 2017

Long-tailed Jaeger. Brendan Click/Macaulay Library. eBird S39027125.

Continental Summary

Pulses of favorable migration conditions this week in the West will bring moderate flights featuring Turkey Vulture, Pectoral Sandpiper, Parasitic Jaeger, Common Tern, Mountain Bluebird, Summer Tanager, and Orange-crowned Warbler, while the East experiences scattered moderate to heavy flights featuring Eastern Wood-Pewee, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, Swainson’s Thrush, Magnolia Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat when conditions allow. Another tropical system off the Atlantic coast brings potential for interesting observations, as does a tropical system moving across the Gulf of California and into the southern Rockies and western Texas.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

We use data collected by eBird users help make more accurate forecasts. If you enjoy the predictions contained in these posts, please consider submitting your own bird sightings to eBird to even further improve the content. Every observation counts, whether it be a single bird at a feeder in your backyard, or an entire day spent in a national park. To get started with eBird, head on over to the site!

Please note that photographs and other digital media showing birds come from the Macaulay Library, which receives credit along with the photographer/observer in the media caption as part of a new initiative that allows public contribution, access and use of natural history media.

Upper Midwest and Northeast

Complex will be one word to describe the forecast period. Moderate and heavy flights will occur in several areas of the region over the weekend, but the extent of these flights will be limited by the presence of significantly more widely distributed unfavorable and marginal than favorable migration conditions. This pattern persists into the work week, accentuated by the approach of Hurricane Jose off the mid Atlantic coast by Tuesday and Wednesday. As this system approaches and passes, some areas may see significantly more intense flights, in particular in southern New York and New England. However, even the passage of this storm does not clear the decks for a major change in the migration scene, with marginal and unfavorable migration conditions persisting through the week in most of the region. Note that the track of Jose may chance, making for a very different forecast for migration and for storm-displaced birds, so stay tuned to Birdcast for updates as we have them.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

Moderate to locally very heavy flights will be the form for the first half of the period to the east of the Mississippi River, while to the west locally moderate flights will be the norm. Hurricane Jose keeps the coastal plains and Appalachians in primarily light northerly and northeasterly winds, allowing for the intensity of these movements. By Tuesday more marginal conditions build into even these areas, and locally light to moderate flights become the norm for the remainder of the period. One exception will be in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida to end the period, when more favorable conditions are forecast to return; moderate to locally very heavy flights will attend these conditions.

Great Plains

Unfavorable migration conditions are in place for much of the region to begin the weekend, but by Sunday a frontal passage brings a wave of cooler air following precipitation. Moderate to locally heavy flights are likely. For the remainder of the period, two additional frontal passages are forecast; however, neither of these is forecast to be extensive or strong, making migration following their passage likely to be intense but local. Additionally, birders should watch these frontal passages closely, as precipitation and nocturnal migrants will likely overlap in each of them, making local fallout and concentrations a possibility. This will be particularly true in the northern and central Plains.

West

Moderate flights kick off the weekend in many areas west of the Continental Divide, while most areas to the east experience local and light flights. But the remainder of the weekend and beginning of the work week see less favorable conditions spread over most of the West, with migration generally low intensity flights following suite. A disturbance passing through the Pacific Northwest on Monday night ushers in a new wave of favorable conditions for migrants to take flight in moderate intensity flights on Tuesday and Wednesday. Another disturbance following immediately begets a similar, more extensive pattern of ushering in favorable migration conditions. This second system will be responsible for light to locally heavy flights in many areas of the region to end the week, with movements reaching their greatest extents by Thursday night. Note, birders in the southern Rockies and western Texas should watch closely for the movements of Hurricane Norma off the Pacific Coast of Mexico: this storm will weaken as it moves inland near the Sonora and Sinaloa border, but it may still retain a significant number of seabirds as it passes over the southeastern corner of the region. Stay tuned to BirdCast for updates.
