Continental Summary

Marginal and favorable migration conditions for light to moderate flights are scattered across the West for the middle of the period and will feature White-winged Scoter, Common Loon, Clark’s Grebe, California Gull, Merlin, American Pipit, and Ruby-crowned Kinglet, while a major pulse of moderate to heavy flights in favorable migration conditions for the East will feature Greater White-fronted Goose, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Vesper Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, and Red-winged Blackbird.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

Upper Midwest and Northeast

A pulse of moderate to heavy flights kicks off the weekend, primarily to the east of the Great Lakes in favorable migration conditions. Southerly winds are quick to build in for the remainder of the weekend, with the threat of precipitation as well, and movements will be significantly reduced in intensity and extent by Sunday. But the next frontal passage enters the scene, moving through the Great Lakes on Sunday night and spawning a new wave of moderate to locally very heavy flights. These will first occur in the Upper Midwest on Sunday night, then spread east to the Appalachians by Monday night, and finally occur nearly regionwide on Tuesday night. From the movements’ greatest extents, intensities will remain similar but the distribution of migration will gradually decrease over the remainder of the period. By the end of the work week, only coastal areas will experience these flights.

Gulf Coast and Southeast

A patchwork of marginal and favorable migration conditions, mostly distributed around the region to the east of Appalachians and Mobile Bay, will allow for moderate to locally heavy flights for the first half of the period. But by Tuesday night a frontal boundary arrives, ushering in more moderate and heavy flights across the region. These conditions largely persist through the end of the forecast period, with movements expected to continue at their Tuesday and Wednesday night intensities and extents. Note that some areas of the region, particularly just north of the Gulf Coast and also in Florida, are forecast to experience favorable migration conditions and some potential for precipitation. Birders should watch these areas carefully for local fallouts and concentrations, particularly in the second half of the period.

Great Plains

A slow migration start to the weekend speeds quickly to moderate and heavy flights by Sunday night in the central and northern Plains. These movements continue into into the latter half of the period, fluctuating between local and widespread depending on the progress of southerly flow back to the region. By Thursday this southerly flow finally reaches its full effect, shutting down flights across the extent of the Plains.

West

Locally light to moderate movements punctuate the northern portion of the region over the weekend. Some of these movements may correspond with precipitation, suggesting birders keep a watchful eye for local concentrations and fallouts where birds and precipitation overlap. Monday night sees a greater extent to these movements, including some locally more intense flights in the southern Rockies. This pattern largely continues for Tuesday and Wednesday, with some potential for locally more intense flights in the eastern Rockies. By the end of the week, a strong system from the Pacific and southerly flow across much of the region will shut down movements in all but the farther southeasterly reaches of the region.
